Movie Review - Breakfast on Pluto
January 24, 2011ShareCillian Murphy plays the role of Patrick Braden a youth who was abandoned as a child at the door of a priest (played by Liam Neesom). The movie takes place in the 1970's with Patrick growing up in a conservative Irish town. His early attraction to cross dressing triggers physical violence from his foster mother and scorn from others. Patrick's adorns himself with colorful clothes and uses witty retorts to the frustration of his educators. Braden by happenstance is drawn into a relationship with an Irish Republican Army gun runner and witnesses the violence committed by both sides.
As a young child he is obsessed with his mother and builds her up as a beauty to emulate. Braden leaves Ireland for London where he hopes to find her. The arrival of his hometown priest to London brings with it clues in finding his mother and insight into the priest’s gentleness towards Braden. The acting of Cillian Murphy, Liam Neesom and Stephen Rea is very good and the spirited personality of the main character is captivating.
